| The most ancient quotation
of Copparo is contained in a charter by Pope Adriano II (870) who confirmed to Firminiano
and his brothers the Corte di Formignana bordering on "Cuparus et Caput
canilis". The jurisdiction of the Massa di Copparo, whose territory was
included among river Goro (of Baura), the Fossa Carulo and the Canale
Bianco, was the object of age-long disputes between the Ferrara and Ravenna churches.
A first solution of these disputes was found in the synod at Ravenna of
955 when Martino, bishop of Ferrara, declared that Copparo territory had been of his
predecessors' property although he did not possess any document in his church confirming
this. In this way, in order to solve the dispute he admitted that Copparo was a Ravenna's
Church property. Later in the years, the territory became a Ferrara property forever.
A charter of archibishop Gebeardo (1040) make reference to the "Pieve
of San Pietro di Copparo", while other Ravenna's documents refer to the "Porto".
In the pseudo bolla vitaliana, Copparo is mentioned among the Ferrara’s Church
properties.
